Madison Mustangs David Pietrowiak takes over at QB for the departed 2 time IFL All-star, 2009 All-star Game MVP, and 2009 Tom Roach award winner QB Marques Korpela. “Petro” came to the Mustangs from UW-Platteville where he played defensive back and graduated with an Engineering degree. Prior to leading the Pioneers defense in interceptions his final three years in college, David was an “option” QB at Germantown high school. While at Germantown “Petro” help lead the Warhawks to 2 straight semi-final playoff appearances.
David was asked to tryout for QB after listing the experience on his tryout registration form to help push then QB Korpela. Petro took it on and made advances each and every week, including a start against the West Allis Predators, leading the Mustangs to 39-6 win last season and helping the Mustangs to an undefeated season and IFL Championship. Petro led all Mustangs rushers with a 9.6 yard avg., and scored 11 rushing TD’s…as a backup.
With Marques Korpela moving to Minnesota, Pietrowiak has embraced the opportunity to take over the Mustangs offense. Prior to the 2009 season Petro was voted by his teammates as a team captain, and has added a much needed dynamic to an already good offense. So far in this 2009 season the Mustangs are 2-0, with Petro leading the Mustangs in scoring with 9 TD’s, total yards 489, and leading an offense that is averaging 53 points a game. Coach Adam Smith, the Mustangs offensive coordinator, has this to say about David, “Petro has been a great surprise this season. We knew he was good and a special runner, but Petro really worked on his passing this off-season and it’s paid off. He’s able to make the correct reads and place our offense in the best possible play. He’s spread the ball around when giving the opportunity to throw and it’s showing with how well the offense is clicking.”
Petro knows he has big shoes to fill, but takes everything one game at a time, as per the Mustangs philosophy, and if you ask him he’d say he has his own shoe prints to make. Petro also knows he is poised for a special run with a special group of guys surrounding him every step of the way.
