Blue Devils shut-out Monarchs 27-0 on opening day
Shorewood, WI - The Burlington Blue Devils started their 2010 regular season campaign last Saturday night with a 27-0 victory over the much improved Shorewood Monarchs. All-Star Kicker Jordan Brown(10) started the year with a deep kickoff pinning the Monarchs. The Blue Devil defense had one goal in mind: Shutout.
On the Monarchs' first possession, the "Darkside" pinned their ears back and smothered the Monarchs offense. The Devils defensive line, anchored by All-Star defensive end Adam Boehm #70, was relentless. After a three and out, All-Star wide reciever Kevin Barrett #15 took the punt return to the house for the Blue Devils' first score. The return for touchdown was sprung with a great block by starting cornerback. Matthew Maldanado #4.
The defense finished the game as they started, with a pair of interceptions by Safeties Jeremy Fisher #1 and Dwight Coffee #27, the "Dark side" refused to be broken. After a pass interference call late in the game, the Monarchs threatened in the red zone only once. They were quickly denied after four attempts and the Blue Devil offense took over on downs.
The Devils Offense was methodical and effective. The O-line, headed by "Mr. Blue Devil" Fontaine Hollis #65, gave quarterback Warren Arnold #11 good protection all night, and allowed runningback’s Joe Brooks #6 and Derek Franco #22 to consistently gain yards. Sustained drives mixed with a few big plays helped keep the defense rested and ready. Opening up the offense a little in the second half, the Devils put the game out of reach. Touchdown receptions by wide receivers Kevin Barrett and Princeton Cameron #19 highlighted the Blue Devils dominate performance.
The Monarchs (0-1) will try to regroup and face the Milwaukee Storm (0-1) next Saturday at Hart Park, while the Blue Devils (1-0) travel to Middleton to take on the two time defending champions, Madison Mustangs (1-0).
