Mustangs wrap up Spartans in season opener

Mustangs gang-tackle a Spartan

Madison, WI -– The Madison Mustangs faced off against the Wauwatosa Spartans to kick off the 2010 season. The Mustangs new defense, same old result! The Mustangs D picked off Wauwatosa quarterback Tony Henner four times and held the Spartan offense down on their end of the field most of the night. Rookie strong safety David Pilla had two interceptions in the end zone halting two Tosa scoring attempts. The stingy D also set up the Mustangs offense in short field situations and multiple scoring opportunities.

Both teams were a little rusty since they last met in Ironbowl XIII last season. The Mustangs missed multiple scoring opportunities, turned the ball over twice, missed a FG, and had 11 penalties! However, with all that said they still managed to put up 32 points and held Tosa scoreless until midway through the 4th quarter.

The Mustangs were lead on defense by Pilla’s two interceptions and defensive back Jimmy Gordon’s seven tackles. The Mustangs offense was lead by quarterback David Pietrowiak’s two touchdowns, highlighted by a 24 yard strike to wide receiver Zak Gordon and a 12 yard scramble after getting his helmet torn off. The Spartans were highlighted by wide receiver Raymon Porchia’s eight receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown.

This week the Madison Mustangs take on Ironbowl XIV hopeful’s Burlington Blue Devils in Middleton, with kick off set for 7:00 pm, while the Spartans return to the friendly confines of Wisconsin Lutheran’s Raabe stadium to take on yet another National Conference powerhouse, the Milwaukee Venom. Kickoff for the Spartan/Venom game is set for 7PM.
