Madison's field general shows he has the right stuff
July 2 , 2007
When it comes to playing the quarterback position in the IFL, it’s hard to find anyone better then the Madison Mustangs Marques Korpela. Just to give you a little perspective, here’s some numbers: In 19 quarters played this season, he has over 900 passing yards and 12 TD’s, in addition to 4 rushing TD’s. He leads an offense that is one of the highest scoring in the league at 24.4 points per game. But if you ask Marques the number he’s most proud of, it would have to be the Mustangs 4-1 start to the 2007 season. Winning is most important goal to Marques, and he exudes it every time he steps on the field.
Marques’ winning attitude emerged at Madison Memorial High School where he played Quarterback for football, and Guard/Forward on the Spartans basketball team. His powerful arm, ability to throw accurately on the run, and overall athleticism, drew attention from various colleges. After graduating in 2000, he attended UW-Whitewater, where after being red-shirted his first year he transferred to Division II Southwest Minnesota State University. At SMSU he gained the respect of his teammates and his coaches earning the starting role at the QB position near the end of his junior season. Due to an unfortunate ankle injury and an invasive surgery, Marques was unable to finish out his senior season at SMSU. Marques graduated from SMSU with a Bachelors degree in Exercise Science and returned home to Madison. In 2006, Marques joined the then Verona Trojans, going 7-2 as a starter and helped lead the Trojans to an Iron Bowl X appearance.
So coming into the 2007 season with weapons like all-star WR’s Zak “Flash” Gordan and Reggie Davis, a strong supporting cast of Running back Marqwin Ryckman and Left Tackle Demetrius Walker anchoring the offensive line, and a fast, hard hitting defense, what do you think Marques’ goal is this year…you guessed it, a ring! With a new organization committed to winning with class, a new coaching staff committed to preparing the team to execute successfully against the strong competition of the IFL, and some new additions to an already strong roster, Marques is as focused as ever. He is putting his own stamp on this league and the players that play with him. Winning is the only statistic, and so far Marques and the Madison Mustangs are doing just that.
