Staying alive

July 16 , 2007

Lake Country vs. VenomOn a relatively cool Saturday night in Franklin, Wisconsin, the Lake Country Cyclones defeated the Milwaukee Panthers 28-11 to improve their overall record to (3-3) and kept their playoff hopes alive. The Panthers never seemed to be out of the game, but penalties and big plays caught up with the young cats as they fell victim to the LC Cyclones.

The Cyclones scored first when their kicker nailed a chip-shot field goal to go up 3-0 early in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Cyclone quarterback, Derek Distin evaded a heavy rush and threw in the flat to his running back Randall Cornwell, who galloped 42 yards to the house for the touchdown and a 9-0 lead.

Late in the second quarter, the Cyclones held the Panthers to three down and outs and forced them to punt. The Panthers punted the ball only to have the Cyclone punt returner muff the ball and get tackled in the end zone for the safety. The miscue woke the Panther fans up and on the next possession, they drove the length of the field but were unable to score a touchdown. After the Panthers nailed a 34 yard field goal, the score was 9-5.

Then Distin and company went to work. In the third quarter, Cyclone wide receiver Jeremy Yanke #83 caught one of Distin’s bolts for a 46 yard touchdown strike as the Cyclones widen their lead to 16-5.

On the next Cyclone possession, Distin again struck gold, this time hitting his other receiver, Big Play Shay for the touchdown increasing the score 22-5.

The Panthers narrowed the gap after finally finding the end zone late in the fourth quarter, but the Cyclones sealed the victory when Distin called his own number and scored on a beautifully executed quarterback sneak. The LC Cyclones were victorious winning this one 28-11
