Franklin, WI – Throngs of IFL fans packed into the Milwaukee County Sports Complex to witness the undefeated Madison Mustangs keep their unblemished record intact with a 54-10 victory over the Milwaukee Venom.
The conference rivals began slugging it out as soon as the opening kickoff was underway with multiple bone jarring hits. On their opening drive, the Mustangs marched 61 yards downfield in only five plays. The series was capped off by WR Reggie Davis’s short yardage touchdown grab. The Venom stung back though. On Milwaukee’s first possession, QB Tony Henner connected with TE Troy Uebele down the sideline for 29 yards to put the Venom deep inside Mustang territory. One play later, RB Kyle Wilson tied up the score with his one yard rushing score.
After both teams succumbed to three-and-out series’, the next break came for Madison. FS Mark Mashburn fielded the Venom punt and returned it 76 yards for the go ahead score. After one quarter, Madison led Milwaukee, 14-7.
The Mustang offense continued to roll in the second quarter as they scored two more touchdowns. The first came on a fly route as QB Marques Korpela found WR Reggie Davis from 30 yards out while the second was on a 20 yard run by HB Kyle Brodd. The Venom managed to cut the deficit at the end of the first half with K Danny Makal’s 49 yard field goal. At the break, Madison led, 27-10.
In the second half, the Mustangs pulled away for good as they scored four consecutive touchdowns. Once again, QB Marques Korpela met up with WR Reggie Davis, this time from 18 yards out. Then HB Kyle Brodd carried the load and his 33 yard touchdown scamper put Madison up, 40-10 after three quarters.
Two more rushing scores in the fourth quarter by backup’s QB David Pietrowiak and HB Russ Beier rounded out Madison’s second half offensive explosion.
Next Saturday, the Mustangs head to Beloit to tangle with the Rock County Gladiators at 3pm. The Venom returns to the Milwaukee County Sports Complex next Sunday as they face the New Berlin Panthers at 5pm.
